After graduating from art college in 1986 Nicola Slattery has continued to work as a professional contemporary artist and art tutor. For several years she lived in Oxford and was an active member of Oxford Printmakers Co Op, and also The Oxford Art Society. Since 1995 she has lived and worked in Norfolk, England. Her art has a distict style and quality which is becoming increasingly recognised across the United Kingdom and also in Europe and the USA. Several leading contemporary art galleries now regularly exhibit her work (see Galleries and Exhibitions page - click here). As well as writing on art techniques and ways of working, Nicola also teaches a several popular art courses and art holidays each year in Norfolk.

Commissioned art work has so far included designs for greetings cards (over thirty different designs published to date), four site specific images for the national pub chain JD Wetherspoons, publicity cards for the theatre group The Eastern Touring Agency, a publicity card for a public relations agency and specific works for private clients.

ARTISTS STATEMENT

The subject is almost exclusively figurative and sometimes inspired by fiction or myth and frequently by events or emotions experienced or imagined. I am told that there is a hard to define but universally recognised element within each image that draws the viewer back to look again and again and I hope that this is true. In a world obsessed with analysis and interpretation, especially in relation to art, I do not want to be drawn into providing ready made answers to the any questions that my work provokes. I am clear that realism is not what it is about. I simply want to create images which lend serenity and thoughtfulness and which allow any meaning to emerge for the viewer themselves. This meaning will vary from person to person and even from day to day for the same person as their moods change.

I enjoy teaching art techniques to others and firmly believe everyone can create meaningful art if they allow themselves the time and space to connect with their feelings and experiment with different methods of expression. Collagraph and Drypoint methods of Printmaking are relatively easy to learn and I have run many Drypoint workshops taking complete beginners from blank paper to finished plate and print in just two hours. I enjoy the immediacy of these techniques which use less durable materials to produce the printing plate and therefore produce small numbers of truly limited edition prints.
